  • Detailed knowledge of Kraft mill recaust chemistry.
  • Detailed knowledge of non-process element (NPE) chemistry and behaviour in the Kraft process and in mills that produce dissolving pulp.

  • Detailed knowledge of formation and control of lime kiln rings in Kraft mills.
  • Detailed understanding of chemical and compositional factors that affect green liquor dregs settling in Kraft and dissolving pulp mills.
  • Quality control of purchased lime and limestone to reduce mill upsets.
  • Detailed knowledge of scale formation mechanisms in lime kiln wet scrubbers.
  • Extensive experience with chemical identification of contaminants in off-grade pulp.
  • Proven track record of solving difficult process chemistry problems (pulp & paper, oil & gas, mining).
  • Extensive experience with design and evaluation of mill and field trials to solve process problems.
  • Worked on process chemistry of zinc electrolyte purification and Betts Process lead refining.
  • Internationally recognized expertise in the areas of water-soluble polymers, surfactants, interfacial properties, flow in porous media and oilfield chemistry.
  • Chemical analysis skills to collect experimental data and solve technical problems, both in the lab and in the field. These include chemical measurement and interpretation by gas chromatography, LC, GCMS, HPLC, SFC, IC, capillary electrophoresis,flow injection analysis, spectroscopy (fluorescence, ICP, AA, UV, FTIR, NMR), X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, isotope analysis, radioactive tracers, interfacial measurements, rheological measurements and wet chemistry techniques.
  • Experience with high pressure and temperature equipment (up to 175 °C and 30 MPa) for solving process problems.
  • Published nearly 40 technical papers, wrote chapters in five technical books, invented two US patents and made more than twenty technical presentations at international conferences and symposia.
  • Member of the Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada (PAPTAC), the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), the Association of the Chemical Profession of BC (ACPBC) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
  • Member of the PAPTAC bleaching and alkaline pulping committees.
